Cultural Diversity at RMIT English Worldwide

07 April 2011

On a daily basis RMIT English Worldwide (REW) embraces multiculturalism and the concept of acceptance, communication and interaction amongst diverse cultures. Each year thousands of students from all over the world attend REW Melbourne to learn English.

Incorporating customised curriculum and high calibre teaching staff, REW is underpinned by quality.  The international curriculum takes into account the range of student backgrounds and study locations and includes a diverse range of contexts, themes and topics; helping to address the different communication needs of its learners.  Students and staff work closely together and have the opportunity to interact in and out of the classroom.

The recent Harmony Day lunch on the 23rd of March highlights the close interaction between staff and students at REW.  'A Taste of Harmony' is an annual event, funded by the Scanlon Foundation that provides Australian workplaces with an opportunity to celebrate diversity in the workforce.  The REW lunch encouraged everyone within the Melbourne Language Centre to socialise and share stories about their unique backgrounds and interests. Attendees were asked to bring along a plate of food to share and to wear traditional clothing or bring items representing their culture.

Ann Wright, Director of the REW Melbourne Language Centre, commented on the wonderful event and how the wide participation is testament to the engaging environment at REW.

"It was a great opportunity to sample various cuisines and celebrate our diversity, everyone really got behind the event and we look forward to hosting another successful lunch next year".

In addition, the Harmony Day lunch provided a forum to acknowledge and support colleagues from Japan, affected by the earthquake and tsunami.  A group of Japanese students prepared a banner and invited attendees to ‘Leave a message for Japan’.  By the end of the lunch, the banner was covered with personal messages and well wishes.  This will be sent onto Japan along with 1000 origami cranes and monies raised for various language schools, some of which were completely destroyed.

"As a global provider of English Language education, we partner with many schools and universities overseas and endorse any activities which assist these communities with rebuilding.  Our team at REW is led by a very proactive program and student coordinators who direct these initiatives and make them reality.  I’m very proud of our collaboration with each other, locally and overseas", stated Ann.
